Housing Programs

Recognizing that applying new skills learned at the shelter is difficult to do for some adults and families while living in an open dormitory, Opportunity House created two housing programs to meet specific needs.

A family  area of transitional housing is shown at left.

Transitional Housing (located directly across the street from our main facility) provides four families with an opportunity to make a gradual transition back into the community. All families involved in this program have demonstrated the ability to make positive changes in their lives while engaged in shelter services, but are unable to maintain these changes once they re-enter the community. This program provides two years of supportive services in the home to these families and assists them in making the changes necessary to live independently in the community.

CLIENT STORY

Transitional Housing

Bobbi and her two daughters have lived at the shelter a few times over the past few years. She has overcome many things in this time, but has found the step from dependent shelter life to complete independence too large an obstacle to overcome.

By offering an intermediate step - independent living with direct access to shelter services and ongoing counseling - Bobbi gained the skills she needed to make it on her own.

Bobbi and her family are our first graduates from our transitional housing program—and they have moved back into the community prepared to live a self-sufficient life.

Permanent housing is offered at two remodeled homes on Pear Street.

Permanent Housing (two rehabilitated row homes on Pear Street) provides safe, affordable housing for up to eight formerly homeless individuals who do not possess the skills needed to live independently and are limited by physical or mental challenges. With case management services available to assist them with activities of daily living and money management, they have been able to move out of the shelter and back into the community. Summer 2006, just across from Opportunity House administrative offices, welcomed five newly constructed permanent rental units (three town homes and two flats) for clients who have completed the shelter program.

Opportunity House is located in Reading, Pennsylvania and serves residents of Berks County. Our goal is to help families and adults become and remain independent members of our community.
